Alpine Tunnel is a historic narrow gauge railroad tunnel located in Pitkin, Colorado. It was once part of the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad and played a significant role in the transportation of goods and passengers through the Rocky Mountains. The tunnel is now abandoned, but the site is accessible to visitors who can explore the remains of the tunnel and surrounding structures. The area offers scenic views and a glimpse into Colorado’s railroad history.
The road up to Alpine tunnel is narrow and difficult for a full sized vehicle. We took a Jeep but had a very hard time passing other vehicles on the way. You are very exposed on a high mountain shelf with steep drop-offs, so caution is advised while driving.

You can reach the Alpine Tunnel by driving north out of Pitkin, CO on Forest Road 765 and turning right on Forest Road 839 towards Williams Pass.
