The Kaymoor Mine was a coal mine and townsite located outside of Fayetteville, WV. It ran from 1901 to 1951. It’s located in the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. You’ll traverse a trail from the well-marked trailhead down to the mine entrance, powder house, former office and lamp house.
Descending down to the Kaymoor Bottom requires a bit of effort. The trail drops over 1000 feet in elevation and has over 800 steps. The stairs are very well maintained, but be prepared for a workout on the way back up.
The Kaymoor Bottom consists of several buildings and a great deal of artifacts. You’ll see the processing plant, coke ovens, old haulage cart and rails that were used to haul ore and coal. There used to be a town with a doctor, store and over 500 residents but only foundations remain.
After you hike back up the stair, make sure to stop by the Arrowhead Bike Farm to grab a well deserved beer and pet the legendary goats.
